about

While I had two college roommates who were avid photographers, I did not get started with photography until I was in my late thirties. I really became a photographer when I decided to commit to a 365 project in 2010, taking photographs every day and publishing them on my blog: avantgarden365. That project changed my life.

I work with everyday subject matter and consider my academic background in Art History to be a major influence on my aesthetic. This training instilled the practice of looking closely and supplied me with a vast mental catalog of images to draw from. I am particularly attracted to color, reflection, abstraction and painterly textures.

My work is rooted in the act of seeing - finding and revealing transcendence in the everyday stuff of the world. It is based in contemplative observation and an open-minded exploration of the visual. This process is simultaneously driven by an interest in formalism and an egalitarian worldview in which everything is worthy of contemplation.
